I'm not sure what exactly the name of the style for these bottoms are, but if you've been keeping up with popular girl groups like Red Velvet, Twice, and BlackPink you'll see what I'm talking about.

The convertible trousers/pants (depending on what part of the world you're from, I'm from the US so I call them pants) can be worn as shorts if the lower halves are removed by the strap/belt/buckle that keep them attached to the upper halves.

Most idols do not wear these as shorts, which is understandable since the stylish appeal is showing a little bit of bare leg between the top and bottom covered halves. In addition, it would be weird if they detached the bottom half as the straps/belts/buckles would be flapping around as the idols dance.

Another related trend is open leg track pants like what Hyolyn wore in her "See Sea" dance practice, where there's bare leg peeking out of long pants.


These styles possibly evolved or were inspired from ripped jeans where the rips kept getting bigger and bigger, like from T-ara's "Sugar Free" era.


The trend might also be a twist on garter belts that connect thigh high stockings to shorts.



Convertible pants seem to be predominantly worn by female idols since late 2017/early 2018, and it looks like the trend will continue for the rest of the year as Chungha wore it for a Station X 0 teaser released a few days ago. They seem to be good for spring and summer as they're not hot to wear and for fall/autumn not cold to wear.

I saw a similar concept from street fashion during Seoul SS18 Fashion Week which caught my eye.


It would be interesting to see other types of clothing like long sleeves, skirts, dresses, crop tops, etc. incorporating this removable/convertible design.

I'm sure designers are already experimenting and released some designs. It's just a matter of K-pop stylists deciding to adopt those looks for their idols, which I would look forward to.

These trousers/pants have been popularized by a Korean apparel brand called Skoot which has been taking over the K-pop fashion scene by storm this year. As of publishing this post, the following bottoms from Skoot are for sale right now:

Another brand called M.Y.O.B also started this trend as Seulgi wore it in Red Velvet's "Bad Boy" MV which was released in January 2018.

I personally would not wear these because they are not practical for casual wear and I am not type to draw attention, but Halloween is in a month so it would make a great costume piece if you are looking to cosplay a K-pop idol :)
